An Alpine Wonderland

While the Simien Mountains are famous for dramatic drops, the Bale Mountains offer a sprawling, high-altitude plateau and dense, misty forests. The Sanetti Plateau, sitting at over 4,000 meters, looks like another planet, dotted with giant lobelias and alpine lakes.

◈

The Ethiopian Wolf

The star of the Bale Mountains is undoubtedly the Ethiopian Wolf. With fewer than 500 individuals remaining in the wild, it is the most endangered carnivore in Africa. The Sanetti Plateau holds the largest surviving population. These sleek, red-coated wolves hunt rodents among the afro-alpine vegetation, and spotting one hunting in the early morning light is a highlight of any safari.

Beyond the Wolf

The Harenna Forest, on the southern slopes of the mountains, is one of the largest remaining natural forests in Ethiopia. It is home to the elusive Bale monkey, giant forest hogs, and leopards. The park is also a paradise for birdwatchers, boasting numerous endemic species such as the blue-winged goose and the Rouget’s rail.

◉

Conservation Challenges

The Bale Mountains face significant conservation challenges, primarily from habitat loss due to agricultural expansion and the threat of rabies transmitted from domestic dogs to the wolf population. By visiting with responsible operators like Mule Ethiopia Tour, your park fees directly support conservation efforts and the local communities.
