An Avian Hotspot
Ethiopia’s incredibly diverse topography, from afro-alpine highlands to lowland deserts and the Rift Valley lakes, creates a mosaic of habitats supporting an astonishing variety of birdlife. Over 860 species have been recorded, with at least 18 endemic to Ethiopia and another 14 shared only with neighboring Eritrea.
The Endemics
Serious birders come for the endemics. The thick-billed raven, the wattled ibis, the blue-winged goose, and the striking Rouget’s rail are frequently spotted in the highlands of the Bale and Simien Mountains. In the drier south, spotting the rare Prince Ruspoli’s turaco or the Ethiopian bush-crow is the ultimate prize.
The Rift Valley Lakes
The chain of lakes running down the Great Rift Valley provides some of the most accessible and rewarding birding. Lake Awassa is teeming with marabou storks, kingfishers, and fish eagles. Lake Langano and Lake Abijatta host massive flocks of lesser and greater flamingos, pelicans, and cormorants.
