Surviving the Extremes
An expedition to the Danakil Depression is not your average camping trip. You will face punishing heat during the day, sulfurous fumes at Dallol, and surprisingly brisk winds when sleeping on the rim of the Erta Ale volcano. Packing correctly is a matter of safety and comfort.
Clothing for the Heat
Bring loose, breathable, light-colored clothing. Cotton or linen long-sleeved shirts and trousers are ideal for protecting your skin from the intense sun. A wide-brimmed hat, polarized sunglasses, and a lightweight scarf or buff are essential. The scarf will protect your face from dust and the sometimes noxious winds near the volcanic vents.
The Volcano Night
Sleeping on Erta Ale involves a nighttime trek up the shield volcano. You need a reliable headlamp with extra batteries, sturdy closed-toe trekking shoes (the lava rock is sharp), and a warm fleece or light jacket for the summit, where temperatures drop significantly at night.
Hydration and Hygiene
We provide abundant water, but you should bring your own reusable bottles or a hydration bladder (at least 3 liters capacity). Wet wipes and hand sanitizer are your best friends, as there are no shower facilities in the desert. Finally, do not forget a high-SPF sunscreen and lip balm with sun protection.
