The Roof of Africa
The Simien Mountains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, offers some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in the world. Massive erosion over millions of years has created jagged mountain peaks, deep valleys, and sharp precipices dropping some 1,500 meters.
Choosing Your Route
Treks can range from a simple 2-day excursion near Sankaber to an epic 10-14 day expedition summitting Ras Dashen (4,550m), Ethiopia’s highest peak. Most hikers opt for a 4 to 5-day trek from Sankaber to Chennek, which offers spectacular views and excellent wildlife spotting opportunities without the extreme physical demands of the summit push.
Encountering the Geladas
One of the highlights of the Simiens is walking among troops of Gelada monkeys. Endemic to the Ethiopian highlands, these "bleeding-heart monkeys" are terrestrial and feed primarily on grass. They are remarkably habituated to humans, allowing you to sit quietly just meters away as they groom and forage.
Altitude and Acclimatization
The base camps in the Simiens are already above 3,000 meters. Altitude sickness is a real risk. We ensure our itineraries allow for proper acclimatization, incorporating gradual ascents and "hike high, sleep low" principles. Staying hydrated and walking at a measured, steady pace (pole pole) are your best defenses.
